Ricardo Montalban

Here’s the trailer for Border Incident, an overlooked 1949 film noir about a joint Mexican-American police effort to halt a murderous slave ring operating along the Mexican border. The film shows you how very little things have changed along the border in the last several decades; it also shows you that there was a lot more to Ricardo Montalban than white three-piece suits, Star Trek scenery chewing and rich Corinthian leather. I appreciated the weight and dignity he brought to his work as the grandfather in the last two Spy Kids movies, in which he looked hale and hearty enough to pull off some derring-do even though illness was eating away at him. Leave it to a hard-core movie geek to give the man his due.
