The Iffy Channel

It appears the marketing people over at the Sci-Fi Channel didn’t do enough research when they came up with the channel’s new moniker. Oh well. They probably weren’t counting on the Polish market, anyway. But if they decide to soldier on, they’ll simply be joining the already long list of companies and brands with names that don’t travel well.

This reminds me of the time when Savon Drugs attempted to rebrand themselves as Osco Drugs. Unfortunately for them, in the spanish-speaking community the like sounding word, asco, means ‘nausea’. So, in California (with its large hispanic population) they started to see their traffic and sales drop after the change. Once they finally did their homework, the name Savon returned–though they were eventually swallowed up by CVS, unfortunately…

  2. Was the name SciFi broken? I guess they think after all these years they could still be confused with another SciFi Channel. Got a chuckle out of the commentary at Whatever. Thank you for the link there. 🙂

And thank you for linking to me in your round-up, btw.
